Optical Comparator
An optical comparator (also called a shadowgraph) projects a magnified silhouette of a part onto a screen, where the shadow image is compared against an overlay chart or measured directly on the screen. Optical comparators are workhorses of the manufacturing floor — robust, relatively simple to operate, and well-suited for inspecting machined parts, stamped components, and cutting tools. They excel at profile measurement and go/no-go verification against a template.
Profile Projector
A profile projector is functionally very similar to an optical comparator and the terms are often used interchangeably. Profile projectors typically project a magnified profile or contour of the part for comparison or measurement, and are commonly used in precision machining, toolmaking, and quality inspection of small to medium-sized components.
Vision Measurement System
A vision measurement system (sometimes called a video measuring machine or VMM) uses a camera, digital imaging, and computer software rather than a projected shadow or eyepiece. Vision systems capture digital images of the part and use edge-detection algorithms to automatically identify and measure features. They typically offer greater automation, programmability, and throughput than optical comparators — making them well-suited for high-volume inspection, complex part features, and applications where repeatability and traceability of measurement data are critical.
